Dwight H. Judy, Ph.D., is Professor of Spiritual Formation at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. After forty years of service, I took retired status in 2009, as an ordained United Methodist minister (Elder). I was a parish pastor in the Dallas area in the 1970s. The discovery of contemplative prayer practices brought me into retreat leadership. I have guided retreats in spiritual formation practices since 1980 and was privileged to assist in developing the nationally recognized United Methodist Professional Certification in Spiritual Formation, approved in 2000.

During my career, I have served as parish pastor, academic administrator of two graduate programs, retreat leader, retreat center director, spiritual director, and faculty member. I was licensed as a psychologist in California and maintain membership in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors and Spiritual Directors International.

I am a graduate of Southern Methodist University (BA in history, 1966) and Perkins School of Theology, S.M.U. (MTh, 1972). From 1980-84, my wife, Ruth, and I undertook PhD studies at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto, CA. Beginning in 1986, I directed the Global (External) Program at ITP and served on the core faculty until 1994, when we moved to northern Indiana to assist in the renewal of a 100-year old conference/retreat center, Oakwood Spiritual Life Center, Syracuse, IN. In 2001, I began my faculty appointment at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary.

I serve on the editorial review panel for Presence, the quarterly journal of Spiritual Directors International. I am a member of the Adjunct Research Faculty for ITP and author of Embracing God: Praying with Teresa of Avila; Christian Meditation and Inner Healing; Quest for the Mystical Christ: Awakening the Heart of Faith; and Healing the Male Soul: Christianity and the Mythic Journey. Discerning Life Transitions: Listening Together in Spiritual Direction (2010) is an imprint of Spiritual Directors International. I was a founding board member of the Fellowship of United Methodist Spiritual Directors and Retreat Leaders.

Ruth and I celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary in 2007. We are parents of two grown sons. Ruth is a Faculty Mentor with ITP's Global program.
